Dear Region VIII Members:
Mahalo for electing me to be your new RVP! I am excited to serve our region
during this upcoming year of change and growth for IAIP. As you know, my slogan for my year is "Moving
Forward" and I gave the attendees of our Region VIII conference a sneaker key chain
to signify moving forward as an organization and also to inspire continuation of our Healthy Insurance Professionals
In my acceptance speech in Las Vegas, I told the story of my former partner's mother,
NAIW National President, Doris Reid Rhiner (1965-66), and her cigarette lighter with the NAIW logo that was distributed
at the Region IX Conference in the mid-1960's. At some point I imagine that there was some discussion about
whether to continue distributing cigarette lighters with the NAIW logo on them in light of health concerns. NAIW changed
with the times and stopped making logo cigarette lighters. What if we refused to change and clung to the same practices
year after year? What if we refused to use social media or computers because that meant change that we weren't ready
for? What if we didn't allow our members to wear pants to meetings, because we had always had a dress code requiring
skirts below the knee?
I am proud to be a member of IAIP, which is cutting edge, modern association that
welcomes change, but holds onto special traditions that have become the heart of our organization. Let's be courageous
in the face of change and Move Forward!
Thanks to Lauri Oakden for her charismatic leadership in the
past year as our RVP.
Aloha and Mahalo,
Katharine M.Nohr, J.D.
